Project Objective

Develop a region wide GIS resource for transportation planners, practitioners, and researchers.

Project Abstract

GIS resources have become an important tool for transportation analysis and require effective management to fully utilize its technology. This study will identify and assess the current state of GIS in region's DOTs and MPOs, and develop a resource tool outlining potential areas of coordination and cooperation among GIS users. Additionally, the study will identify GIS resources available for transportation researchers in the region.

Task Descriptions

• Task 1 – Review literature
• Task 2 – Develop survey instrument
  • Identify GIS data standards, sources and management resources
  • Identify GIS applications, hardware platforms and communication technologies
  • Identify GIS transportation analyses, GIS application methodologies and GIS research applications
  • Identify statewide GIS efforts impacting the DOTs and MPOs, including data warehousing among state agencies
• Task 3 – Administer survey and collect data
• Task 4 – Investigate potential regional and cooperative efforts
• Task 5 – Develop GIS resource report for DOTs, MPOs and transportation researchers
